House sparrows are numerous breeding birds in Denmark. They live close to humans and have done so ever since agriculture arose.
The bird breeds in colonies, usually in buildings. However, it can also breed in trees in rare cases. The individual couples stay together throughout their lives and in the same place.
It is mostly the male who is active with nest building, while both male and female feed the young. In the last days before leaving the nest, the chicks develop individual calls so that the parents can recognize them during feeding, after the nest has been abandoned. In winter, the house sparrow stays near the nest and often appears in flocks where there are good food opportunities.
